These sketches are based on the idea that
harpies represent some sort of corruption of motherhood. The fact that harpies
are exclusively female and possess a maternal quality seems to hint at 'the
monstrous feminine'. I took inspiration
from Louise Bourgeois’s giant spider sculpture.
A combination of elements from storks, bats and spiders were used to
create these creatures.
And how is the happy pregnant woman related to these sketches? I am freaked out. Which is a good thing for your case :D
ReplyDeleteReally like these designs, despite how horrifying they may be. Looking forward to seeing things develop :) I think it's always good that a creature without blood or violence can provoke such horror. Guillermo del Toro may be an interesting research point.
